More than a job: Building your veterinary nursing career beyond the qualification

Abstract

Achieving a veterinary nursing qualification is a significant milestone, but for many, the question quickly becomes: What now? Entering the workforce as a qualified veterinary nurse is an exciting step, yet it can also present uncertainty about long-term career direction. This session provides clarity and guidance for veterinary nurses who are looking to explore their next steps and build a career pathway that aligns with their goals, values, and aspirations.

The veterinary nursing profession offers a wide range of opportunities that extend far beyond general practice. From clinical specialisation to leadership and management, education, research, industry roles, and advocacy, the potential for growth is substantial. However, many nurses feel unsure about what options are available or how to begin navigating these pathways. This presentation breaks down the possibilities and provides practical strategies to make informed decisions about professional development.

To inspire and empower, this session also features real-world case studies—stories of veterinary nurses who started out just like you. Each one faced the same questions and uncertainties, and through exploration, education, and advocacy, built careers that reflect their passions and values. These examples are certain to ignite your own sense of possibility and help you envision what’s next.

We will also touch base on:
• Understanding Career Pathways - Exploring the diverse roles within veterinary nursing, including specialisation (Emergency and Critical Care, Exotic Animals, Anaesthesia), advanced clinical roles, and non-clinical opportunities in management, education, and corporate sectors.
• Professional Development and Further Education - Identifying the benefits of continuing education, including certificate programs, advanced qualifications, and Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) credentials, and how these can enhance career prospects.
• Setting Career Goals and Building a Plan - Practical approaches to self-assessment, setting achievable goals, and creating a roadmap for career progression.
• Networking and Professional Involvement - Leveraging professional associations, conferences, and online communities to build connections, learn from peers, and access mentorship opportunities.
• Advocacy and Registration - Understanding how professional advocacy and mandatory registration support the credibility and future of the profession, while empowering individuals to take ownership of their professional identity.
• Creating Sustainability in a Veterinary Nursing Career - Understanding work-life balance, avoiding burnout, and aligning career choices with personal values to ensure long-term fulfillment.

By the end of this session, participants will have a clearer understanding of the pathways available, strategies for ongoing professional development, and the confidence to take the next step toward achieving their goals. Whether your focus is clinical excellence, leadership, teaching, or contributing to the broader veterinary industry, the tools and knowledge shared—alongside inspirational case studies—will empower you to shape a career that is both rewarding and sustainable.

Our case studies are a testament to what’s possible: each one began with a newly qualified nurse asking, “What now?” and ended with a career built on purpose, growth, and impact. This is your opportunity to take control of your professional future—built on a foundation of advocacy, recognition, and continuous growth.
