Preparation for anaesthesia of the horse

Abstract

This session provides participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively perform general anaesthesia in equine patients under field conditions. Through a combination of theoretical discussion and case-based application, participants will learn to develop comprehensive anaesthetic plans tailored to individual horses, taking into account patient factors, environmental limitations, and available resources. The session also addresses the identification, prevention, and management of common complications associated with field anaesthesia, such as hypotension, hypoventilation, and recovery-related injuries. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to confidently plan and execute equine anaesthesia in the field with an emphasis on patient safety, welfare, and best-practice standards.
