Not-so-sweet: Treating and nursing patients with DKA
Abstract
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is the most common endocrine emergency we see - and a disease that demands a lot from the veterinarians and nurses caring for them. In this session, we’ll explore how DKA occurs and the impact it has on our patients - explaining the common clinical signs, physical exam findings and key diagnostic results, and how we treat and care for these patients as a result.
We’ll discuss how to calculate and administer insulin, dextrose, electrolyte solutions, and fluid therapy with confidence. We’ll also explore the specific nursing skills and priorities involved in monitoring, stabilising, and supporting these patients as they recover, including techniques for vascular access, sampling, glucose monitoring and more.
Learning Outcomes:
● Understand the pathophysiology of DKA and the impact it has on the patient
● Appreciate the clinical signs and examination findings in DKA patients
● Understand the common diagnostic tests performed and how to interpret their results
● Be able to confidently calculate and administer insulin, dextrose, electrolyte solutions and fluid therapy to DKA patients
● Understand the specific nursing requirements for DKA patients and the
practical skills that nurses can use throughout their care.

Biography
Laura started her nursing career in 2007 at a small GP clinic and became a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) in 2010. Over the years, she gained experience in first-opinion, surgical referral, and emergency clinics. In 2015, she joined the internal medicine team at a new referral centre as deputy head medicine nurse. This role sparked her passion for internal medicine, and in 2019, she earned her Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) qualification in Small Animal Internal Medicine.
To share her knowledge, Laura created Veterinary Internal Medicine Nursing, a platform offering CPD to registered and student nurses through a website, podcast, and social media. She also lectures internationally, has written for peer-reviewed journals, and launched the Medical Nursing Academy in 2023—a learning platform for nurses passionate about internal medicine.
Despite her many achievements, Laura continues to work as a practicing RVN, dedicated to providing excellent care for her patients and supporting fellow nurses.
