Navigating the grey: Communication, mindset and ethics in palliative care and assisted natural death
Abstract
Advances in veterinary medicine can lead to aggressive treatments for severe, chronic conditions, fostering a culture of medical maximalism - pursuing every option regardless of quality of life. This binary mindset - treatment versus euthanasia - often makes it difficult for veterinary teams to navigate less familiar, nuanced options like palliative care and assisted natural death. These choices occupy a “grey zone” that challenges clinicians to balance ethical, emotional, and cultural considerations. This presentation will demonstrate how effective communication and an open mindset can help veterinary teams support clients, patients, and each other through this complexity. Emphasizing understanding and flexibility promotes ethical decisions focused on the patient’s dignity, comfort, and respecting the diverse values of clients.
