Reproductive emergencies - what every nurse should know
Abstract
Veterinary nurses are often the first to assess and respond to patients presenting with reproductive emergencies. From dystocia to pyometra, these critical conditions can escalate quickly without timely recognition and intervention. This session explores common reproductive emergencies seen in dogs and cats, including dystocia, pyometra, eclampsia, and retained placentas. I’ll cover key triage points, nursing priorities, and how to support the veterinary team during emergency procedures. With a practical, case-based approach, nurses will leave empowered to respond confidently, improve patient outcomes, and enhance client communication in high-pressure reproduction situations.
