If we don't do it, who will? Infection control in veterinary medicine

Abstract

Creating and maintaining an environment to help control infection in the veterinary setting is a critical part of everyday activity in a clinic or hospital setting. While the responsibility for adhering to protocols is everyone’s responsibility, ultimately it may fall to the veterinary nurse to review, revise, and enforce protocols as a means of providing a safer environment for the team, the patients, and the clients. This presentation will look at pathogens commonly found in a clinical setting, infection prevention, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and implementation and communication. Understanding what pathogens may be present and the danger they present in disease transmission is the first step in establishing appropriate protocols. Easy to implement ideas as well as foundational cleaning practices will be reviewed. Gaining full participation from all clinic members is one of the most important steps needed to introduce and enforce infection control and prevention practices. Suggestions for gaining “buy in” from all clinic members will be presented.
