Workshop Four: Troubleshooting radiographs using PALACE approach

Abstract

High-quality diagnostic radiographs are the foundation of effective veterinary care—but achieving them consistently requires more than just pressing a button. This two-hour interactive workshop is designed for veterinary professionals looking to refine their radiographic skills through a structured, practical approach.

We’ll begin with a concise presentation introducing the PALACE method - Positioning, Anatomy, Labelling, Artefacts, Collimation, and Exposure - a systematic tool to assess and troubleshoot radiographs. This framework empowers teams to identify where and why an image may fall short, and how to make targeted improvements.

The second half of the workshop involves collaborative group work, where participants will assess real-world radiographs using the PALACE method. Through discussion and shared insights, teams will identify faults and propose solutions that not only enhance image quality but also align with the principles of ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) - minimising radiation exposure while maximising diagnostic yield.

This session aims to build confidence in troubleshooting radiographs, enhance positioning skills, and strengthen team-wide consistency in radiographic technique, all while fostering a culture of radiation safety.
