Equine ophthalmology: Advancing care through specialised support

Abstract

Equine ophthalmology is a rapidly evolving subspecialty within veterinary medicine, presenting unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the anatomical and behavioural characteristics of horses. Veterinary nurses play a pivotal role in the successful management of ocular conditions in equine patients, from the initial assessment to postoperative care. This presentation explores the integral responsibilities of veterinary nurses in equine ophthalmology, including recognising early signs of ocular disease, assisting with advanced diagnostic procedures (such as ultrasonography), complex treatment protocols, and ensuring patient safety during ophthalmic treatments and surgeries.
Through case studies and clinical examples, we will highlight best practices in nursing care for common equine eye conditions such as corneal ulcers, uveitis, and trauma-related injuries. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of client education, pain management, and long-term monitoring to improve visual outcomes and quality of life for equine patients. By enhancing knowledge and clinical skills in this niche area, veterinary nurses can significantly contribute to the early detection, treatment success, and overall welfare of horses with ophthalmic disorders.
