The A to Z of CPV: Nursing the parvovirus patient

Abstract

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and resilient virus affecting young and/or unvaccinated dogs. Managing these cases either as outpatients or inpatients can be highly challenging. Nurses are at the forefront of infection control in their hospitals, and it is vital that they ensure good hygiene is used in order to prevent the spread of disease. Additionally, parvovirus can lead to sepsis, septic shock, multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and death if untreated. Therefore, parvovirus patients can tend to be critically unwell requiring high quality nursing care.
