First impressions matter – exploring initial international student accommodation encounters

3:45 PM - 4:30 PM

Abstract Overview

This workshop is proposed as an opportunity for the APSAA Internationalisation Special Interest Group (ISIG) to engage members with a focus on the pre-arrival to first two months period of the international student resident lifecycle.
Research has shown that while this period is critical to student wellbeing and success, there remain opportunities for the sector to develop and enhance effectiveness towards excellence across these initial encounters. It is also recognised that what is good for international students, also enhances the experience of all students.
This session will present initial insights from a range of international sources and provide the opportunity for participants to pool their experiences, exploring how we can individually and collectively respond to the challenges and opportunities.
One of the opportunities identified by the ISIG (a sub-group of the APSAA Research and Knowledge Committee) is to help members gain insights through collective and targeted primary research on this topic and to develop content that informs our industry guidelines.
