Embedding Gender-Based Violence Literacy in Student Accommodation Through Customisable, Student Informed eLearning
1:45 PM - 2:45 PMAbstract Overview
Learning Consent’s Sex & Consent eLearn modules provide evidence-based consent and respectful relationships education designed specifically for higher education institutions. Grounded in student co-design, the modules equips learners with the knowledge, language and practical skills to navigate sexual consent confidently and prevent gender-based violence within university communities.
Aligned with the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence, the modules support institutions to move beyond compliance and foster meaningful behavioural change. Licensed by six universities and accommodation providers, with three sustaining the program for three consecutive years, Sex & Consent demonstrates sector confidence and adaptability.
Video scenarios throughout the modules are derived from extensive consultation with university students across Australian campuses. Rather than modelling idealised or ‘perfect’ representations of consent, the narratives present authentic, nuanced conversations that reflect how young people navigate intimacy, peer pressure, coercion, disclosures and reporting in everyday university life. This realism ensures the content feels recognisable and credible.
What distinguishes Sex & Consent is its sexual pleasure-centred approach. Guided by the communicative approach to consent, the modules foreground pleasure alongside communication and shared responsibility, balancing harm prevention with positive relational capability and modelling what healthy, mutually satisfying relationships look and sound like in practice.
Institutional customisation is embedded at the core of the program’s design. Reporting pathways, support services and policy frameworks are integrated directly into each implementation, ensuring accuracy, clarity and alignment. Distinct domestic and international versions maintain consistent learning outcomes while reflecting diverse cultural contexts.
Built to recognised accessibility standards, Sex & Consent provides accommodation providers with a scalable, research informed solution that strengthens student confidence, clarifies support pathways and reinforces community standards grounded in safety and respect. It supports providers to shape the future of student accommodation by embedding excellence into everyday residential practice.
